Shearwater Research currently offers the Petrel 2
and NERD (Near Eye Remote Display) dive computers. While different in their
display of information, both function and operate nearly identically. The main
difference between the NERD and the Petrel 2 is how the information is
presented to the diver. Petrel 2 dive computers utilize a 2.4” high-resolution
display, while the NERD uses a 2mm Micro LCD and optical magnification system.
Operation of all Shearwater Research dive computers is simple to use with adaptive, easy to navigate menus. Commands are entered with piezoelectric buttons. Warnings are clear and concise using color-coded warnings. A simple 2-button bailout allows for quick and easy changes to open-circuit. No confusing icons are used; rather the Petrel navigation is done with plain-language. Divers have a choice of metric, or imperial units.
Banks of up to 5 open-circuit and 5 closed-circuit gasses may be saved, and turned on and off as needed. Underwater, gasses may be added, removed, or changed should any unplanned events occur.
Shearwater dive computers feature the following modes of operation:
